Oisoy August Box: Celebrating the Qixi Festival with Sweet & Savoury Treats

In August, our snack journey took inspiration from one of China’s most romantic and enchanting traditions — the Qixi Festival (七夕, also known as the Double Seventh Festival). Often called the Chinese Valentine’s Day, Qixi is a celebration of love, star-crossed destiny, and the enduring connection between two people separated by the heavens.

The Story of the Qixi Festival

The legend behind the festival tells of Zhinü, a weaver girl who was the daughter of a goddess, and Niulang, a kind-hearted cowherd. Their love was deep and true, but forbidden. When the Goddess of Heaven discovered their secret marriage, she separated them across the Milky Way, creating a wide, impassable river of stars between them.

Heartbroken but determined, the couple longed to reunite. Their devotion touched the magpies of the world, who once a year on the seventh day of the seventh lunar month form a bridge across the stars so that the lovers may meet.

Even today, this story inspires the festival’s celebrations. Couples exchange gifts, gaze at the stars, and honour the enduring power of love. It’s a time filled with romance, sweet foods, and shared moments — which made it the perfect theme for our August box.
